ChemLab #12 - Predicting Reaction Products
Date Submitted: Score:
Lab Group Members:
6M HCl and NaOH are corrosive. If you spill any on your skin, immediately begin flushing with water and notify your facilitator.

1. This is a MicroLab.
2. Use your knowledge of reaction types to complete the equations. Have your teacher approve the completed equations.
3. Perform each reaction according to the directions and record all evidence of a chemical reaction. Hint: some reactions may be slow.
Reactants and Predicted Products Evidence of Reaction
1.     Na(s)   +   H2O (l)   →
Teacher Demo - Hint: there are two products, one is a gas the other is an aqueous base.

2.     Mg (s)   +   HCl (aq)   →
Place a piece of magnesium ribbon in a chemplate well. Add 10 drops of 6M HCl and observe.

3.     Zn (s)   +   HCl (aq)   →
Place a piece of mossy zinc metal in a chemplate well. Add 10 drops of 6M HCl and observe.

4.     Cu (s)   +   HCl (aq)   →
Place a piece of copper metal in a chemplate well. Add 10 drops of 6M HCl and observe.

5.     Zn (s)   +   CuSO4 (aq)   →
Place a piece of mossy zinc metal in a chemplate well. Add 10 drops of copper (II) sulfate and observe.

6.     CuSO4 (aq)   +   ZnCl2 (aq)   →
Put about 10 drops of copper (II) sulfate in a chemplate well. Add an equal amount of zinc chloride and observe.

7.     Ca (s)   +   H2O (l)   →
Put a piece of calcium in a chemplate well. Add 10 drops of water and observe.

8.     HCl (aq)   +   NaOH (aq)   →
Put 1 drop of phenolphthalein in a chemplate well. Phenolphthalein is an "indicator" that is colorless in an acid and purple in a base. Add 10 drops of 6M HCl to the well. Slowly add the same amount of 6M sodium hydroxide, 1 drop at a time, and observe.

9.     Mg (s)   +   O2 (g)   →
With tongs, bring a piece of magnesium ribbon over a burner flame and hold until the reaction is complete. Place the reaction product in a chemplate well and observe.

10.     KI (aq)   +   Pb(NO3)2   →
Put 10 drops of potassium iodide in a chemplate well. Slowly add 5 drops of lead (II) nitrate and observe.
